Thoughts on Music

    As I mentioned when discussing the music for A&O, starting with a symphonic base seems like a good idea. I have been discussing this with a composer friend who, so far is hip to designing the music for this.

Here is something I wrote in our communications regarding the essence of the piece;

I think I am gaining another perspective on the material, by approaching it from an abstract point of view. Even though some ideas of that were in my head when I was doing rewrites, now having described the progression in those terms, I'm seeing the material in a different light. What I wrote in the last Revision (1999) is in my head as the direction I wanted to take, but defining the stages of progression in abstract terms, gives the whole piece a greater depth. I'm not sure how it will play out if I keep going with this kind of analysis. It's like the body and soul. When I wrote before I was forming a body with only limited understanding of what the soul was. Now, at this stage of life, I feel like I am looking into the soul of the piece. In fact, I tend to realize that the ultimate presentation cannot manifest without, not only seeing the soul, but defining it, in order that the soul can manifest in the outward the form of the body. Isn't that the foundation of Creation?

Even though I have a number of scripts that I crafted (for A&O) , they are only a starting point. Using a Synopsis of the abstract concepts can, and I think it does, provide a roadmap for the direction this can go in. You are 100% correct when you say listening and evoking. There definitely is a theological foundation that needs to be honored and serve as a guide for the general direction, but in the context of creativity, there is a flow of concepts that are Ineffable. In that way the voice that manifests in this, is not our own. The challenge is to be receptive to that flow of influx from above, being responsive to it and being able to interpret that "message" into a form that utilizes the tangible realities of staging techniques and the tools, that are available to create, a representation of that influx.

I will address the music, but these conversations reveal the essence of how the creative process takes place for this project.

In regard to A&O, I really am going to focus on content and not predetermine any expectations regarding how the material will translate musically. I have ideas, but I do want to let serendipity flourish. I want to express certain content in prose and I want to look at what I have already written (in a different context) to see if any of that could fit that bill and possibly integrate. Although I've written a lot on this subject (script), the prospect of collaborating at a musical level is becoming more real. I almost feel like I need to start fresh and MAYBE integrate the past material. It almost feels like what has been done is only a springboard for what it needs to become. I have a vision of that, but I think it's going to take a new shape. A shape that I am uncertain as to what that will be. I'm going to start by posting the older versions (presuming I can find them) and see how that motivates me to craft the next revision.
